Spanish-born of Ghanaian descent, Nico Williams feels elated after making his debut for Athletic Bilbao in Spanish La Liga.
Nico featured for the first time for Athletic Bilbao in their 2-2 thrilling stalemate with Real Valladolid on Wednesday night
Jon Morcillo gave the hosts the lead in the 14th minute only for Fabian Orellana to equalise for Pucela in the 70th. Veteran forward Raul Garcia regained Athletic’s lead in the 76th, but Shon Weissman equalised again in the 85th minute.
Nico Williams was introduced by Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelino Garcia on the 62nd minute to replace goalscorer Jon Morcillo.
The game was marked by a special event, however, when Inaki Williams’ brother Nico took to the field for his first-team debut, the pair becoming the first brothers to play together in La Liga for Athletic since 1986.
"It’s a joy for my brother, for me and for my family to be able to debut and hopefully I can continue adding minutes with my brother,” Nico told the club's official website after the game.
“We have to keep working. I’m super happy to have been able to debut, although it’s a pain to not have won the game"
He is the younger brother of Inaki Williams who's one of the highly-rated attackers in the La Liga following his explosive performance in European football with Athletic Bilbao for the past seasons.
Nico's current deal runs to 2024 and has a release clause of €40m included. There’s the basis of an agreement to extend the deal, but it’s nowhere near Inaki’s contract. His runs to 2028, with a release clause of €135m included.
Nico Williams and his elder brother, Inaki were born to Ghanaian father Felix Williams and Liberian Marie Arthuer, both met each other at the Buduburam, a refugee camp for Liberians in Ghana.
Both players are eligible to represent either Ghana, Spain or Liberia at the senior level in future.
