1992 AFCON: Tony Baffoe did not deserve captain the Black Stars, says Tony Yeboah

Former Leeds United poster boy, Tony Yeboah has indicated that Tony Yeboah did not deserve to captain the Black Stars in the final of the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Ghana did well in that tournament and managed to advance to the finals where they were going to face the Ivory Coast. Unfortunately for the Stars, they were to miss their go-to man and captain Abedi Ayew Pele.

In his absence, the captains armband was given to Tony Baffoe for the matchday as Ghana ended up losing 10-11 on penalties to the Ivorians.

Looking back to that time in an interview with GTV Sports Plus with Kwabena Yeboah, Tony Yeboah has noted that Tony Baffoe didn't deserve to wear the armband for that game.

“He was not supposed to captain and it was a fact because Kwesi Appiah was the captain and they took the captain for Abedi so there were a couple of senior players and Tony Baffoe was new in the National team.

“Honestly Tony Baffoe did not deserve to be captain because apart from me there were senior players like Opoku Nti, Frimpong Manso in the team", he said.

The issue of captaincy did not only happen in that tournament, but it is also synonymous amongst many Black Stars teams and has ended up causing the country dearly.
